Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016 everyone! The occasion of the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated on August 25 with great pomp and show across the country and the globe. It is one of the more popular festivals surrounding the Hindu religion. Many refer to the occasion as Krishnashtami, Ashtami Rohini and Gokulashtami and this marks the birth of Lord Krishna as the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu (the Preserver). The auspicious occasion according to the Hindu calendar falls on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapad month. Among the many ways to celebrate this colourful festival is the one where many events in the life of Lord Krishna are re-enacted with almost every neighbourhood vying with each other to be the best in every aspect. Children especially are always keen to set up their own tents and make kaleidoscopic arrangements of Lord Krishna and those who were integral to his life. The most spectacular celebrations are in Mathura and Vrindavan, which were the regions most closely associated with this God. The significance of Krishna is in the fact that this most powerful presence of an avatar of God on earth was for the express purpose of the destruction of evil and the triumph of good - it ensured the preservation of humanity. He was integral and the leading personality in the fight against all wrongdoing. Lord Krishna's avatar is the most-powerful of all incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: While he was the avatar of God, Lord Krishna had humble beginnings starting with his birth in a jail, his subsequent escape from there and his early life being spent in a small village. Countless attacks were made on him by evil spirit and demons, but Lord Krishna was too wily and too powerful and always managed to defeat his enemies, especially his Mama (uncle) Kans - Krishna was to ultimately get rid of the evil presence of King Kans from earth and thereby save the people who were being subjugated under his reign. His most popular teachings and a veritable call to action is given in the good book - The Gita. It is recommended reading for everyone.

Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: Among the most important of Lord Krishna's teachings is to abandon all attachments and keep working hard without actually looking out for tangible returns. The compensation for the doer will come of its own. The idea is to never stop striving to be the best in whatever it is that one does. And all of this has to be done not with greed as the originator of action, not even lust and envy must drive a man forward, the most important things he must have in mind while doing anything is love, humility, and compassion. Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: The most important warning thereafter is to look out for time - the greatest killer of them all. It will eventually kill off everything. Therefore, a human being's time on earth must be spent thoughtfully and not be wasted in a listless existence. Each and every moment is precious and must be lived to the full, without fear and favour and without imposing cruelty on other life forms. (Photo - PTI)
Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: Importantly, Lord Krishna warns against ignorance. Ignorance is not bliss. One must learn throughout one's life and implement that learning in making their own, as well as the life of others, better in whichever way possible. This is a constant work-in-progress for every man, woman and child on earth. One must not waste life on a purposeless existence where you are not a contributor to the greater good of the community. Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: One must also not overly think about the dualities in life - gains and losses or even happiness and distress or pain. One must rise above them and learn to tolerate each and every aspect of life as and when they come. One must always be above these feelings to be considered as a higher human form as differentiated from lesser forms like animals. (Photo - PTI)
Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: As a human being, a person is obligated to fulfil his assigned role in society and do it well. If everyone did thr same with gusto and enthusiasm, rather than shirking it or eyeing other people, the entire community will progress and progress well. Where this kind of self-imposed and society-imposed system breaks down, there only pain and disappointment will come. (Photo - Reuters)
Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: The control of the mind, therefore is one of the strongest recommendations of Lord Krishna. The human being who learns to control his mind and manages to yoke it in a fine, disciplined manner throughout his life, he will be capable of producing virtual magic in his and others lives. If this control of the mind is not possible, then the mind itself becomes one's own worst enemy and will lead you down the road to pain and destruction. The only way to control the mind is through practice, constant practice. (Photo - PTI)
Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2016: In his human incarnation as Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu was born to Princess Devaki (sister of Kans) and her husband Vasudeva in Mathura jail. By dint of providence, he managed to escape for a brief period (it was a dark and stormy night) in which he carried the newborn on his head in a basket to Gokul. While he himself returned to jail, Krishna was raised by his foster parents Yashoda and Nanda who loved him dearly as their own son.
