'Had Jawaharlal Nehru accepted US offer, India need not have had to seek NSG membership': India need not have had to make desperate efforts now to get membership of elite NSG had Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru accepted the then US President John F Kennedy's offer of helping the country detonate a nuclear device much before China did in 1964, according to former Foreign Secretary Maharajakrishna Rasgotra. He also said that if Nehru had accepted the offer, not only would have India tested the nuclear device first in Asia, before China, but it also "would have deterred China from launching its war of 1962 and even imparted a note of caution to (Pakistan's) Field Marshal Ayub Khan's plans for war in 1965," according to a Observer Research Foundation (ORF) release. "Kennedy, who was an admirer of India's democracy and held its leader Jawaharlal Nehru in very high esteem, felt that democratic India, not Communist China, should be the first Asian country to conduct a nuclear test," he said. Unlike Pakistan, India will never be a theocratic country, says RSS: "India will never be made into a theocratic State and will never become one," a senior RSS leader asserted today while citing how Pakistan turned into a "failed" country by choosing such a path after partition. Speaking at an event here, RSS Joint Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said the difference between the two countries was that Pakistan turned into a Muslim State and became a theocratic State while India never made the State on religious lines. "We (India and Pakistan) have civilizational ties as the roots are the same. Culturally what is the difference between us and them?" he said. "Pakistan is not a State but it is a state of mind, an interviewer has said. If Pakistan were a State, then we could have thought about things, but Pakistan is a state of mind," he said. (PTI)

"Rats" wrecking Cong from within, says Niranjan Patnaik: With Congress out of power in Odisha since 2000, senior party leader Niranjan Patnaik today said "rats" were wrecking the party from within and need to be shown the door. Political parties now have people as members who view politics as a way of making money. "These people have no other known source of income or earning and have used politics to amass wealth," he said. Without taking any Congress leader's name, Patnaik alleged they have nothing to do with the party ideology or the spirit of public service and take all political decisions only out of greed. "These rats must be purged if parties are to regain their role as institutions defined by ideology and the spirit of public service," he said. (PTI)

"We cannot continue to allow thousands upon thousands of people to pour into our country, many of whom have the same thought process as this savage killer." (Rueters)

Orlando shooter does not appear to be part of ISIS plot, says Barack Obama: The gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando gay club was motivated by "extremist information distributed over the internet", but does not appear to be part of a broader ISIS plot, US President Barack Obama said today, calling it an apparent example of "homegrown extremism". "The one thing that we can say is that this is being treated as a terrorist investigation. It appears that the shooter was inspired by various extremist information that was disseminated over the internet," Obama told reporters after receiving a briefing from the FBI this morning. BJP only knows to instigate riots, says Ajit Singh: Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh today hit out at BJP over the alleged migration of Hindus from Kairana town in Shamli district, alleging that the party only wants to instigate riots and it does not have any policy of development. "They (BJP) never want Hindus and Muslims to unite, that is why they practice the politics of making them fight against each other," Singh alleged. Holding the ruling BJP responsible for the migration of Hindus in Kairana, he claimed the statistics provided by BJP MP Hukum Singh is "false" and that Muslims have also migrated from the village.
