'Holi is anti-women': New posters have come up on the JNU campus that describe Holi as an "anti-women" festival as "historically it has sexually abused Dalit women in the name of celebrations". The campus, which was recently rocked by a controversy triggered by an event last month to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, has become the nerve centre of a debate on freedom of speech. Titled "what is holy about Holi", the posters plastered on the walls of eateries, markets and schools on the campus are also doing the rounds of social media. "Why does Brahminical-patriarchal India celebrate the burning of Holika, an asura bahujan woman? What is holy about holi? Historically, the festival has also sexually abused Dalit women in the name of celebrations," the posters read. The text on the posters further read "celebration of Holi is against womanhood". Mamata Banerjee set to regain power in West Bengal, says poll; Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is set to return to power in West Bengal by winning 178 seats and getting an increased vote share compared to 2011 assembly elections, says an opinion poll conducted by a news channel. Congress-Left parties' alliance will be the prime challenger to TMC and are expected to win around 110 seats in the 295-member state assembly, the survey by ABP News-Nielsen says. It projects that BJP will not emerge as a big player in West Bengal and will receive a 5 percent vote share and will win just one seat. As per the statement, there is not much difference between TMC and Left-Congress alliance in terms of vote share. While the former will get around 45 percent votes, much higher than the 39 percent it got in 2011, the latter would get around 44 percent share. (PTI)

HC orders floor test in Uttarakhand Assembly on Mar 31: The Centre got a jolt today as the Uttarkhand High Court ordered a floor test in the Assembly on March 31, giving a new turn to the political developments two days after President's Rule was imposed in the state. Justice U C Dhyani also allowed nine disqualified rebel MLAs of Congress to participate in the voting but their votes will be kept separate and will be subject to final outcome of the petition challenging their disqualification. "The session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly shall be convened for 31-3-2016 at 11 AM. The only agenda, which would be taken up in the Assembly on that date, would be the Vote of Confidence, as directed by the Governor earlier," Justice Dhyani said in his 25-page judgement. It observed that the only change is in the date which is fixed by the court. (Reuters)
