  • Salman Khan production ‘Hero’ box office collections managed to effect a reversal of fortunes on day 3, which was a Sunday, after looking like failure was writ large across the movie due to its initial 2-day take being not up-to-the-mark and not just that, it had actually started falling. While there has been no major rise, yet it has done better than what it earned on day 1 and day 2. On Monday, the film went back to its downward spiral, but by then it had managed to tag itself with a qualified ‘success’ an even gain ‘respect’ – it is by no means a failure.(Bollywood Hungama)

On day 1, ‘Hero’ box office collections were just about average, despite the major promotional booster shot by the superstar – the movie managed Rs 6.85 crore in the domestic market after it recorded an occupancy rate of 35-40 per cent in theatres. It is clear that Salman Khan’s promoting power was having to battle hard against all the reviews which have more or less panned the movie. ‘Hero’ features newbies Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Much depended on word of mouth feedback, which if positive, would have brought people to theatres. But this was belied as ‘Hero’ box office collections on day 2 (Saturday) actually fell and were recorded at just Rs 6.62 crore. (Bollywood Hungama)

On day 3, when it seemed that ‘Hero’ take would follow the trend and collapse, the numbers actually went up to Rs 7.73 crore, the best it had managed till then – very few movies manage to raise their earnings after they have started to reverse in the first few days. (Bollywood Hungama)

On day 4, (Monday) which was a working day, ‘Hero’ box office collections reached just Rs 3.03 crore. With Friday looming and new movies that are set to screen starring some big stars, ‘Hero’ prospects to last beyond the first week are dim indeed. The upcoming movies are the Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Katti Batti’ and self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insaan’s ‘MSG-2.’ While Kangana Ranaut has been the box office office collections queen for quite some time, and if all accounts are right, then ‘Katti Batti’ is set for tremendous success. ‘MSG’ had done very well at the B.O. and its sequel is expected to fare well too. The domestic take has therefore, risen to Rs 24.13 crore. And when the foreign earnings are added to that, the total sum rises to Rs 24.99 crore. (Bollywood Hungama)

To be sure, ‘Hero’ box office collections rested on superstar Salman Khan’s pulling power without him actually having any role to play in the movie, which was a tall stretch as the film boasts of no other top-draw actor who could have acted as a magnet for the masses. ‘Hero’ stars newcomers and, even though they may have the backing of Salman Khan, Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty performances could have altered the fate of the movie only a little bit. Salman Khan hyping up Sooraj Pancholi immensely has definitely not paid off as much as it was hoped. (Bollywood Hungama)

However, Salman Khan has been putting up a brave face throughout and on Saturday took to Twitter to say that he is very much satisfied with ‘Hero’ box office collections. Here is what he said: “Thanks to the people who have gone to see ‘Hero’ and welcomed Suraj and Athiya in the film world and all those who are going to see it. Lots of respect. Collections superb , whole team of ‘Hero’ super happy with them. Would not have been possible without you going to see it. Thank you.”(Bollywood Hungama)

As with everything else that he does, Salman Khan had gone all out to promote ‘Hero’. He even promised fans that he will personally sign theatre tickets of ‘Hero’ that are sent to him. He announced this on Twitter in his inimitable way: “Watch ‘Hero’. Send me your ticket. I will sign 100 tickets. One of them could be yours. Send your ticket(s) to PO Box 9808 Bandra (w) post office, Mumbai 4000050. Apna naam, address aur twitter handle bhi likhna.”(Bollywood Hungama)

As far as his official promotional effort is concerned, Salman Khan has made sure everyone who goes to watch movies is aware of the fact that ‘Hero’ released on Friday as well as the link with himself. Also, the theme of the movie is modern and youngsters may be willing to give it a try – it has definitely not appealed to a wider audience. (Bollywood Hungama)

In the end, however, Salman Khan’s ‘call-to-action’ was not appealing enough for his fan-hordes to descend on theatres to watch ‘Hero’. (Bollywood Hungama)

Aside from the Salman Khan booster shot, one other thing that went in favour of ‘Hero’ is that it did not face any competition from rivals as no top-draw movie was released alongside and neither was any other strong rival looming from the previous week. (Bollywood Hungama)
