Repealing suicide law
The decision of government to efface Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code which makes attempt to suicide a crime has given once again fodder to the intellectuals to ponder over. On the one hand, it is a matter of satisfaction to know that the government has decided to decriminalise the bid to suicide. As CS Vaidyanathan, a Constitution expert, has very rightly remarked that one who is utterly desperate takes recourse to suicide. If he is able to end his life, he is gone. But if he is not, he is booked under section 309 and has to undergo more mental torture even though he is already in distress. It is most pertinent to understand that such a person needs solace not sentence. On the other hand, it is time to cogitate and understand the problem with a broader approach by addressing the causes that compel someone to take such an extreme step. The policy-makers must come up with solutions. The government must establish more counseling cells all around to curb suicide.
