Be sensible on gas-pricing
Apropos of the edit ‘Time to take call on gas’ (January 14), the gas-pricing decision is being delayed as political parties are using this as an election issue. Obviously, any increase in the price of power, gas and any other utility are unpopular but the elected governments have to take this in stride if they are sincere in their objectives of serving the long-term interest of the people. The price of gas has to be fixed at a rate that would encourage investment and eventually the market forces will determine the correct price. The difficulty and risks are not worthwhile at the price decided by the government. With declining price of both oil and gas, fresh investments have dried up. It is necessary to go beyond the rhetorical postures adopted by the political camps supporting and opposing it. It is absurd that these politicians have no compunction in importing gas at $12 but have problems in giving $10 to spur exploration in the country.
