Go, Rajan, go
Of late, the national media is agog with controversy concerning the future of Raghuram Rajan, the Governor of RBI, after his current term expires on September 4. At the outset, let me say that any such speculation, however it is disposed, is just premature. That said, there are enough indications that he may prefer to go to an American University where he is expected to carry out research on India’s economy. It is pertinent to note that his family has already left for the US. But it is ironical that BJP government actually needs a “yes-man” as the next RBI Governor. No self-respecting person, especially one of Rajan’s stature, would ever like to dance to the music of the government, more so if she/he was deliberately subjected to this endless controversy, the roots of which may be traced back to the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. However, irrespective of what prime minister Narendra Modi might have wished, Rajan should go and that too honourably as he, for sure, does not need government support for any purpose whatsoever. In any case, the only victim of the BJP’s dubious game plan would be India as a fast developing economy which is currently aiming for reaping some good economic harvest in the near future. But who cares?
