CII Shanghai Club To Showcase India

AJAY JAIN

New Delhi, July 6:   If China is increasingly looking like a preferred destination for Indian companies, costs and other entry barriers may not suit many of those who just want to test the waters first.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) says that help is at hand with the launch of the India Club China in Shanghai, where companies can have permanent display booths and an unmanned office for themselves.

The confederation has set up the India Club at Shan-ghai Mart, a permanent sh-owcase for international manufacturers and service providers to exhibit their products and services.

Confederation of Indian Industry senior director Piyush Bahl told FE, “The mart is made on a ground area which is about one-hundredth that used by Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, but has a covered area five times as much. There are already 1,200 manufacturers from around the world here.”

“CII has taken up 600 square metres (sqm) space at the mart on lease. We would be offering space and facilities depending on what the companies want. At the primary level of membership, we are offering modules in multiples of 4 sqm for Rs 4-5.6 lakhs a year depending on the type of company,” he said.

“The Indian government has already contracted 20 sqm with us for three years to promote tourism in the country. After China accorded India an approved tourism destination status, the potential of tourist inflow is huge. Not only the Chinese, but even the huge expatriate population from countries like Taiwan and Germany in Chinese cities are the target,” added Mr Bahl.

“Companies such as Voltas and Drish Shoes and CEOs like Shahnaz Hussain Widia have expressed a strong interest. About 400 companies have asked for more details. The club starts functioning on October 1 this year, and is the first of its kind offering to Indian business,” he said.

“Confed-eration of Indian Industry will act only as a facilitator and will not be involved in any commercial transactions. Amenities include a huge library of trade intelligence and a fully equipped business centre.

A core team of CII professionals, including native Chinese with domain knowledge of the Chinese market, will help facilitate the business development process. We will help generate business enquiries, facilitate Indian and Chinese participation in trade fairs and generate sector and product specific market reports,” said Mr Bahl.

There is also a secondary membership for those who do not want an exhibit space but are entitled to all other facilities and services and have access to information.

The fees for this varies between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.75 lakh per year.
