MUMBAI, APRIL 12: India's Lupin Ltd.has received approval of the US Food and Drug Administration to sell cefixime, an antibiotic for children, the company said on Thursday, sending its shares up as much as 3.3 per cent.
"Commercial shipments of the product have commenced," it said in a statement.
Lupin said the drug, a stronger version of its existing Suprax-branded antibiotic, was likely to be popular as it offered parents the convenience of administering a smaller volume of the medicine children.
"The incidence of respiratory infections is high in children and physicians need products that offer greater patient convenience and compliance," Managing Director Kamal Sharma said in the statement.
At 0636 GMT, Lupin's shares were up 2.5 per cent at 630.75 rupees after rising as high as 636 in the Mumbai market, while the benchmark BSE index was down 0.3 per cent. |
