New Delhi, Aug 18: After a brief lull, Kargil residents have been again gripped with panic with Pakistani troops resorting to unprovoked artillery shelling on the periphery of the town, official sources said here today. The shelling, which began at 1815 hours last evening and continued for over one hour, created widespread panic among the residents of Goma village just outside the town, they said.
People ran helter-skelter after several Pakistani shells landed in an open field in the village, they said. However, there was no report of loss of life or damage to property but residents in the nearby locality fled to safer places, the sources said.
Shelling was also reported from Hathimatha area on Drass-Kargil stretch of National Highway 1-A last evening.
Pakistan also made an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt traffic on the highway when it fired scores of shells near the plateau area, close to the Doordarshan transmitter.
