Remaining 2 peaks recovered

Gaurav C Sawant
DRASS, JULY 25: Even as the Indian troops recovered the last two remaining peaks -- Sando Top and Zulu Top -- in the Drass sector after a fierce fight late last night, Pakistan seemed to have adopted an aggressive stance with heavy shelling of Drass town.

For the first time since the recovery of Tiger Hill, the Drass Brigade Headquarters was heavily shelled with splinters flying all around. This followed a bloody battle last night in which 30 Pakistani soldiers were reported killed. But in the face of stiff Pakistani resistance, India also lost five jawans while 10 others were injured. The bodies were yet to be recovered. The infiltrators were reported to have been pushed close to the LoC even in Mushkoh Valley and Batalik sectors.

``In Mushkoh Valley infiltrators continue to offer resistance,'' an official said.

But pushing the infiltrators out did not appear to be the end of Indian army's problems. ``Though infiltrators have been driven out from Drass, now Indian troops have an uphill task holding onto the peaks. They are launching counter attacks on all the peaks which we are holding close to the LoC,'' an officer here said.

This was evident as Pakistan artillery continued to fire at peaks now occupied by Indian troops. ``It seems like a case of role reversal now. Earlier, they occupied the peaks and we were trying to dislodge them. Now, they are trying to make life difficult for us here,'' the officer added.

So it happened in the case of Zulu Top last night and on Peak 5353 close to the LoC, which was earlier recovered by Indian troops.

``The Indian infantry soldiers reached the Zulu Top and drove away the infiltrators. All the enemy bunkers were found empty. But moments later Pakistan launched a ferocious counter attack,'' disclosed a senior officer.
