AHMEDNAGAR, July 20: The impressive Municipal Council building stands out among the other buildings of this historic town. Ahmednagar Municipal Council started its functioning on November 1, 1854. Initially, the British Government had appointed 12 commissioners to conduct the affairs of the municipal council. The first meeting of these commissioners was held on November 15, 1854.An Act enacted in 1873, recognised the right of the tax-payers to elect their representatives. In the beginning, the office of the municipal council was located near the fire brigade premises. Later, residences of employees were constructed at this site. The location of the municipality's office was changed twice. The present building of the municipal council was constructed in 1936. During the golden jubilee celebrations of the independence, the municipal council's building was repainted.
It is said that the municipal council has well preserved the documents belonging to a period of 125 years. It is altogether a different matter that information of these documents is not easily passed on to the needy residents. Often the citizens are made to run from the pillar to the post. It would not be a surprise if these well preserved records disappear one day.
