Dortmund has a Deko at the new star

MUMBAI, JULY 17: Peter Leko, the new chess star from Hungary, won the 27th Dortmund Grandmasters Championship here on Saturday. According to information reaching here, Leko played out a 21-move draw with Ivan Sokolov of Bosnia-Herzgovnia in the final round to finish with five points.

In a field that was as strong as it can get, barring the absence of Garry Kasparov, Leko (elo 2694) has to content with five players who were better than him in rating.

Leko, who will turn 20 in September, defeated Michael Adams, Veselin Topalov and Jan Timman and drew with the others. Viswanathan Anand played out his sixth draw with Vladimir Kramnik to settle for four points.

Two other games Anatoly Karpov vs Timman and Adams vs Topalov is still going on.

Results (Round 7): A Karpov (3.5) vs J Timman (1.5), I Sokolov (2.5) drew P Leko (5); V Anand (4) drew with V Kramnik (4.5); V Topalov (2) vs M Adams (3).

Strong Indian field at Biel

BIEL: A strong Indian line-up, lead by IM Krishnan Sasikiran (elo 2536)and GM Pravin Thipsay (2492) will be competing in the Biel Chess Festival from July 21 to 30. It is a 9-round Swiss League event where the other Indian participants are Abhijit Kunte (2465), GB Prakash (2438), V Saravanan (2429), DV Prasad (2422), S Kidambi.

The festival will be hosting other tournaments. The Masters will be held from July 19. The main tournament begins on July 21 while the rapid tourney ends tomorrow.
