Sir Alf Ramsey passes away

LONDON, April 30: Sir Alf Ramsey, who took England to their only World Cup final victory in 1966, has died, his former club Ipswich Town said today. He was 79. Ramsey played 31 times for England before going on to manage the National team from 1963 to 1974.``He died on Wednesday morning,'' said a club official. Ramsey, knighted in 1967, suffered a mild stroke last June. He coached the unfashionable Ipswich Town to the English league championship in 1962 in their first season in the first division. In his playing career he was regarded as one of the most cultured defenders to play in the England side. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
