Amjad 'tricks City Club to win

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, March 30: Roopali Sports Club missed chances galore and paid the price when they went down 2-4 to defending champions City Club in the PDFA I-Division Super League tie at the Ammunition Factory Stadium, Kirkee here today.

City Club, riding on Amjad Akkalkotkar's heroics, the one-man strike force, who struck a hat-trick with goals in the 28th, 34th and 89th minute, joined Shivajians atop the four-team Super League, with three points. For Roopali, striker Bapu Raikar netted both their goals in the 19th and 33rd minute.

With the first quarter confined to possesion football, Roopali took the lead in bizarre fashion. A casual lob by medio Ashwin Mancherkar from the right to Bapu Raikar, saw defender Micheal Pinto and 'keeper Khalid Parwani involved in a mix-up. The result was disastrous. Khalid, who left his charge, tripped. Micheal who was shielding Bapu got foxed, which allowed the latter get a faint touch and slot into an open goal.

City Club's equaliser was the result of poor 'keeping on the part of Anup Jadhav. With Micheal Susainathan playing a regulation pass to Amjad, a first time attempt on the run by Amjad beat the the diving 'keeper at the first post.

With the game on even keel, Roopali took the lead again after a determined run by Santosh Joshi on the right. Converging on a Ashwin pass, Santosh did well to outwit Sanu Jacob and Mujeeb Sayyed. The pass that followed by Santosh virtually left defender Micheal and the 'keeper stranded, leaving Bapu to do the rest, with the simplest of headers. Thereafter, it took only 15 seconds for City Club to equalise. Amjad's left-footed effort from the top of the box, despite being sandwiched by defenders Vinod More and Ashwin Bansode, found the inside roof of the net.

Having played out the first session on level terms, City Club added two more in the second. First Karuna Balan's shot had the 'keeper concede, owing to a premature dive.

Roopali, stung by the goal, went on the offensive but were let down by Santosh Joshi on three occasions. City Club on the other hand, made the issue safe when Amjad sprinted well to a Dominic Albert pass and outsmarted the defence to end up lobbing over an advancing 'keeper in a one-to-one confrontation.

Today's fixtures: Deccan XI `A' v City Club -- 4.00 p.m.
