Ahmedabad cops mute spectators to violence

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, March 30: Police played mute spectators on Monday when Bajrang Dal activists set shops and vehicles on fire in busy city areas. Incidents of violence at Lakhoti Talavdi, Naranpura, and the Jamalpur crematorium were pointers to police disinterest and apathy.

The attacks started right from Lakhoti Talavdi area, where Haribhai Solanki, who was killed in Vejalpur area on Sunday night, lived. Here Bajrang Dal activists not only smashed the front and side glasses of a Maruti van but also ransacked a bicycle and mattress shop in front of police.

At the time of the incident, Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya, Additional Commissioner of Police (Sector I) V.V. Rabari, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Zone I) K.C. Patel, police inspectors of the Naranpura area, the preventive crime branch, and the local crime branch were present.

Similarly, at Stadium Crossroads and Jamalpur crematorium, police remained inactive when the mob hurled stones on a fakir and bashed up a television cameraman. A mobile van of Ellisbridge police was patrolling at NID crossing when some unidentified persons had stabbed an auto-rickshaw driver in the afternoon.

In all these incidents police claimed that they have registered cases against groups of unidentified persons but none was arrested.

Naranpura police inspector D.B. Bangia said that none of the victims had approached them with a complaint. Police commissioner Hiralal clarified that in Vejalpur, the incident had happened after a verbal altercation and the victims had identified the assailants. But in the Paldi murder there was no eyewitness.

He claimed that police have registered all the offences. However, when contacted, Naranpura police station said that there was no complaint registered in the incident that took place at Lakhoti Talavdi around 1 pm.

On the other hand, Ellisbridge police registered a case of rioting when some unidentified youths hurled stones at Imperial Bakery and damaged a scooter near Hotel Panshikura around 1 p.m. In this case, Ellisbridge police station Inspector S.K. Mali was the complainant.

In Gaekwad Haveli Police Station, a complaint of attack on cameraman Subodh Vyas was registered. Vyas was beaten by some Bajrang Dal activists in front of policemen. No arrests have been made.

About the Bajrang Dal action in front of the policemen, Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya was at loss for an explanation. He said, ``We will see if there any complaint is registered in these incidents''.
