Andhra MLA attempts suicide in Assembly

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
HYDERABAD, MARCH 30: A suicide bid by Telugu Desam party member S Madhusudhana Chary caused quite a commotion in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

When Speaker Y Ramakrishnudu disallowed notice for an adjournment motion on the plight of cotton farmers, Chary who moved the motion drew out a bottle of endrin and tried to consume it.

Several TDP members including some ministers rushed to him and snatched away the pesticide from him.

In the scuffle that ensued, the liquid inside the bottle spilled all over and several members blocked their noses to fight off the bad odour. The security staff had to wash the tables with fresh water and spray perfume to rid the smell from the air-cooled House.

As soon as the House met at 9 am, Chary raised the issue and wanted to speak about the problems of farmers who have been committing suicides in the State continuously for the last two years. Congress members too gave a notice for adjournment motion on the same issue.

Disallowing all the notices, Ramakrishnudu, however, agreed to give them an opportunity to raise the matter during zero hour. But, Chary, who joined Anna TDP recently, displayed the bottle and threatened to consume poison to highlight the problem.

Then, alert TDP members A Govind Naik, AJVB Maheswara Rao and ministers C Krishna Yadav and K Srihari forcefully snatched away the bottle. In fact, he declared a few days ago that he would commit suicide inside the House if the government fails to save the farmers.

Expressing annoyance over the incident, Ramakrishnudu said: "The House is not meant to commit suicides, but to discuss the peoples' problems. This is not the correct way to raise the issues concerning the people". He directed the security staff to the clean the place.

However, continuing his demand for an adjournment motion, Chary rushed into the Well and squatted on the floor. Expressing solidarity with him, several Congress members too came and stood by his side for a while. Later, Congress leader P Janardhan Reddy urged the chair to allowChary to raise the matter.

When the Congress members kept on arguing with the Speaker, some TDP members raised the involvement of a person belonging to Congress in the child smuggling racket in the state which has been unearthed by the police last week.

Finally, Chary and the Congress members ended their dharna with Legislative Affairs Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju assuring that the government would make a statement on the farmers' problems after the question hour.
