Chennai, March 30: A division bench of the Madras High Court today adjourned, to April eight, further hearing on the two petitions suspending the sentences on AIADMK legislator R Tamaraikani for assaulting Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugham in the state assembly on March 22 last.It may be recalled that the bench, comprising Justice T Jayarama Chouta and Justice K Thangaraj, had suspended on March 23 last, the first sentence pronounced by Assembly Speaker P T R Palanivelrajan, following which Tamaraikani was released. He, however, was immediately rearrested in the wake of the second sentence of 15 days' simple imprisonment as per a state assembly resolution on March 23 last.
Tamaraikani was finally released on March 25 last as per the bench order suspending the second sentence.
When the case came up for hearing today, special public prosecutor Shanmuga Sundaram said the habeas corpus petition filed by Tamaraikani's counsel, S Manian, could be disposed of as Tamaraikani had alreadybeen released on bail. Veerasekaran, Tamaraikani's counsel, however, wanted both petitions to be heard together.
