No power shortage from next month: Munde

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOLHAPUR, March 19: The shortfall of nearly 1000 mw of power will be done away with by next month, as the State Government will start purchasing power from Enron in April, stated Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde here on Thursday.

Munde was speaking media to journalists at the aerodrome at Ujlaiwadi this afternoon. On the occasion, he also said that load-shedding schedules will be effectively cut down, as soon as Enron starts supplying power to State Government.

Munde today admitted that there was a shortage of nearly 1000 mw of power during peak demand hours. A similar statement was made by Shrikant Mane, vice-president of All India Power Federation.

Shinde had stated that State Government's propoganda that there will be no power cuts in near future as state has become self-sufficient in power generation, was not true.

Reacting to Mane's statement, Munde said that shortfall of nearly 1000 MW during peak hours was the main cause behind load shedding. ``This shortage in demand and supply will be done away with from April, as the StateGovernment will purchase power from Enron,'' he said. Even the load-shedding schedules will be cut down, he added.

Reacting to another query regarding resignation by Minister of State for Urban Development Ravindra Mane, he said, neither Mane's resignation from ministership nor former chief minister Manohar Joshi's resignation from State assembly will have any effect on Shiv Sena-BJP alliance government.

Reacting to another query over withdrawal of letter of intent granted to Powerplant Performance Improvement Ltd in the contentious ``retrofitting'' contract issue, that has plagued MSEB since 1997, Munde said the State Government was not at loss in the controversy, since PPIL itself had backed out from the project. ``International tenders will be invited once again and if the rates of new tenders are found to be higher than the earlier ones, MLA Digvijay Khanvilkar (who has filed a public interest litigation, challenging the decision of MSEB to award contract to PPIL) should be held responsible for the consequent loss of the State Government,'' he said.
