HC grants Jatin-Lalit bail

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, March 19: Music directors Jatin Pandit and his brother Lalit Pandit were released today on a personal bond of Rs 1000 each by the Bombay High court.

The brothers were arrested on March 9 and 10 respectively for neglecting court summons in a decade old assault case and remanded to judical custody by Metropolitan Magistrate B A Shelar at the Bandra court upto March 23. They were lodged at Arthur Road jail. Their bail plea to the Sessions Court was also rejected by Additional Sessions Judge R Y Ganoo.

The duo against whom a case was lodged in 1989 allegedly for assaulting the lobby manager of Hotel Centaur, Kishore Naik, had failed to appear before the court after charges were framed in 1993. When the music duo ignored several summons they were declared absconders on the basis of a police report filed on February 20, 1999. While Jatin was arrested on March 9, Lalit surrendered before the court the next day.

Counsel for the Pandit brothers P R Vakil and C R Hirani told the court that their clientsdid not appear before the magistrate's court due to some misunderstanding as they thought the matter was settled by a friend who was also known to the complainant (Naik). The counsel also submitted that their clients have due respect for law and judiciary.

Additional Public Prosecutor Jyoti Pawar said that the brothers were well-known figures and hence should have shown respect for the law by attending the court personally or through their lawyers.
