According to sources, Rajbir married Kulwant Rai three months ago, against her father's wish. Kulwant, who belonged to a different caste, was not accepted by Bajwa as his son-in-law.

To avoid her father's wrath, Rajbir had reportedly disappeared from the town with Kulwant, about two months ago. But the couple returned about 10 days ago. A week ago, Bajwa reportedly took her daughter to her house and tried to persuade her to severe ties with Kulwant. However, Rajbir reportedly did not oblige him. On Tuesday, Rajbir reached Kulwant's house and pleaded with him to save her from her father. According to sources, as Kulwant was takeing Rajbir and his sister Neena to a safer place on motorcycle, they were attacked by Bajwa near the Mehna Chowk.

Eye witness told The Indian Express that Bajwa shot at them twice, resulting in Rajbir and Neenasustaining injuries. Rajbir, who had sustained injuries in her chest, later succumbed to injuries. Kulwant's parents have demanded police protection.
