Captaincy not under threat: Azharuddin

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Hyderabad, March 9: Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin on Monday asserted that his captaincy was not under threat, but hastened to add: ``Of course, it is the selectors' decision.''

National selector Shivlal Yadav, who was present at the signing of a contract between Azharuddin, Bridgestone Tyres and ACC Cement, said the selectors did not discuss the captaincy.

``We have faith in him and he has the ability to lead the country,'' said Yadav. He added there was a debate on vice-captaincy after the Calcutta Asian Test Championship. ``We were keen to have Sachin (Tendulkar) for this post. But for reasons best known to him, he declined and it ultimately went to Kumble.''

For Azharuddin, the disappointment of India not qualifying for the Asian Test Championship was more painful than bettering Sunil Gavaskar's record of 47 Tests as captain. ``It is more the disappointment of India not playing in the final,'' he said.

The skipper said Tendulkar would continue to open the innings. ``Tendulkar is the world'sbest opening bat in contemporary One-day cricket. He gets a chance to bat the 50 overs.''

Azharuddin will be playing his fourth World Cup, and third as captain, if appointed. ``I was disappointed with our performances in 1987 and 1996 when we had the home conditions in our favour, but somehow lost in the semi-finals both times. But this time, we stand a good chance if we play to our potential.''

Azharuddin also said there was nothing wrong in talking to the players of the opposing team. ``It is my style.''

He said he had taken the Board's permission to skip Ranji Trophy matches. He, however, wished his team the very best. ``I will settle down in Hyderabad, not Mumbai, though I have a house there.'' His next project is the cricket academy and may be a hospital too.
