PANAJI, FEB 11: Goa Governor Lieutenant General J F R Jacob today formally took charge of the State after the imposition of President's Rule late Wednesday night. The Governor's first task was to visit the Secretariat and begin work.Addressing the press later in the day, Jacob said he would attend office every day and function from the Deputy Chief Minister's cabin. He said he was ready to meet members of the public during office hours.
Following mediapersons' suggestions, Jacob agreed to consider re-examining the decisions taken by the previous government shortly after chief minister Luizinho Faleiro lost the support of two members of the Legislative Assembly.
Jacob, who was addressing the media for the first time after the State Govt was beset by crisis, insisted that his task of recommending President's Rule in the State was aided by all the political parties demanding dissolution of the State Assembly.
He also felt that public opinion, voiced by the local press, was instrumental in helpingpoliticians make up their minds.
Jacob noted that the most important task before him was to hold the reins of government and ensure free and fair elections so that a popular government may assume office at the earliest.
