PUNE, Oct 16: Faced with the increasing number of complaints about garbage not being cleared at various places in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has devised a novel `card system' to tackle the problem, which will be launched on Saturday. The civic body will invite complaints from citizens on a `pink-coloured card,' and lift the garbage accumulated at areas notified under the complaint within 48 hours. The administration will then inform the complainant of the `action taken' in that particular area on a `white-coloured card.'
Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor admitted that the `Clean city' campaign that had been launched on May 1, 1997, had come a cropper. However, inviting the direct participation of citizens in the campaign, Kapoor has sought to revive the project since the past month.
What prompted the administration to launch the card system was the citizens' repeated plea that there was no proper machinery to register their complaints. A statement issued by Kapoor stated that several people had complained that their grievances were not adequately noted by the staff. Even as the administration has decided to enlist support from the people, the latter complained that officials were unavailable or then ward officers did not bother about the problem.
The cards will be distributed free. Citizens have to fill up the details of the area which has garbage accumulated for several days. Acting upon the complaints, the garbage will be cleared within 48 hours, Kapoor said adding that they will send their replies back to the complainants - thus paving the way for an interaction. Nearly 2,000 cards have been printed and Kapoor will personally supervise by checking the registers for the entries on the second and fourth Wednesday.
