Sampras survives as seeds fall

With 12 points in their kitty, Argentina need to play the Netherlands in their final league game, the result of which will be inconsequential for Argentina.

Defending champion Pakistan went down 1-2 to Atlanta Olympic silver medallist Spain in the crucial Pool B match of the ninth men's World Cup hockey at the Galgenwaard Stadium. The defending champions now have six points from three matches but have to play Australia and Poland.

More to life than hockey
The ambience at the Galgenwaard complex is more of a picnic than the senior business of World Cup hockey. Massive crowds, unofficially estimated at around 30,000, have been thronging the venue where it is one big party with equipment, entertainment and food stalls dotting the grounds outside the stadium.

Babu regains lead
International Master N Sudhakar Babu (6.5 points) of Indian Bank regained the lead with a fighting victory over Chandrasekhar Gokhale (5.5) of Indian Airlines in the seventh round of SK Vaidya Memorial International Rating chess tournament in progress at Arwade High School.
