PUNE, May 25: Thundercatz who were denied a well deserved Kishorilal Memorial Championship, accomplished the feat in a telling fashion clinching the 5th Kirkee Cantonment Board President's Cup soccer title with a 3-1 win over Roopali Sports Club at the Ammunition Factory ground here today. After being in the arrears in the first half, they scored three goals in a span of seven minutes to silence the drum beats of their opponents who were too early in their celebration.
It was Dheeraj Bali who made things look so easy with a brace, after Kenny Mani levelled the score in the 40th minute of play, after Santosh Joshi put the Roopali ahead in the 28th minute of play.
The Roopali who have had a fine run in the championship till the final entered the ground amidst the beating of the drums by the supporters, but they could use it after the match, (the main purpose the drums were brought) and had to be satisfied with the runners-up title.
It was in the second session the Thundercatz looked a champions outfit as they applied themselves well as a team and their defenders who were playing upfront in the first 35 minutes altered their way well to hold the speedy Roopali forwards Bapu Raikar and Santosh Joshi at bay.
Roopali were a firm favourites for the title because they were well balanced team, determined to maintain the fine record run in the championship till the final.
If it soured towards the end after a rosy beginning, it was they who had to be blamed. Two defensive lapses costed them the victory, and in the forward, they were mauled by the lanky Prashant Ghadge who was all over the playing arena in the 70 minutes of tussle.
But again the Thundercatz keeper was over ambitious with his tendency of rushing in front, but Prashant Ghadge's perfect anticipation saved them from goals with two goalline saves in the first session.
It was Thundercatz who held the fort in the first 20 minutes of play with Kenny Mani, Dheeraj Bali making it to the penalty area, but lacked the finishing prowess.
There was a massive drawback in the Thundercatz's defence, as they played upfront and were never able to make a recovery in crisis. And it was one such move by the Roopali's striker Santosh Joshi pounded a powerpacked right-footer to beat Anand Surve under the bar, in the 23rd minute of play.
Soon after the goal Roopali's approach changed with their players kicking the ball out of play on many occasions. But the Thundercatz kept their cool and played their natural game and managed to retire with a 0-1 deficit.
Seven minutes after the change over Thundercatz were rewarded for the hard work. Dheeraj Bali ran down the right flank and through fed Natraj Madurai who deflected the ball to Kenny Mani to boot home the equaliser.
In the 49th the goal hungry Dheeraj Bali made it 2-1, and two minutes later he made it with a solo effort to round up the tally.
