CBI enter quarters

MUMBAI, May 25: Central Bank of India (CBI) scored a narrow 2-1 win over a youthful Companeroes in the first round of the Police Cup Hockey Tournament at the Naigaum ground here today. Central Bank move to the quarter-finals where they meet Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Central Bank scored first in the 18th minute through a penalty stroke. Companeroes goalkeeper Lucio Fernandes committed an infringement on a forward. Veteran Wendell Gomes converted the stroke.

The second goal came couple of minutes later. Ashley Piedade received the ball from Sriniva Lapplikar, sidestepped the onrushing goalkeeper and placed to the right.

The Companeroes tried gamefully to reduce the margin. They held possession and whenever they broke through the Central Bank defence, they failed to convert the openings. Also, the Central Bank goalkeeper Douglas Rodrigues was like a rock, blocking many shots.

In another match, Union Bank (UB) scored a 4-0 win over Khalsa Gymkhana. Union Bank scored as early as in the 6thminute when Rajesh Matkari scored. Barbinder Singh made it 2-0 in the 15th minute with Matkari adding his second and the team's third in the 34th minute. BG Kulal completed the tally with a 50th-minute goal.

UB takes on Maharashtra State Police in the quarters.

Pandya, Sitlani champs

Narayan R Pandya and Kiran Sitlani emerged overall best athletes in the men and women section at the senior Citizens Athletic Meet at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday.

Results: Men: 75 m, (60-65 yrs): 1. CJ Menezes, 2. BM Baliga, 3. Manohar D Nawara; 75 run, 66-70 yrs: 1. Anthony D'SOuza, 2. Pascal Martins, 3. NJ Jumani; 50 m, 71 onwards: 1. Narayan R Pandya, 2.BP Hirve, 3. Bhagwan G Panjari

Women: 75m, 55-60 yrs: 1. Kiran Sitlani, 2. Sarla Mirchandani, 3. Kirti Mandrekar; 50m, 66 yrs and above: 1. Sandhya Parelkar, 2. Mohana Jotwani, 3. Usha Savara
