HOBART, May 19: Australian international cricket umpire Steve Randell appeared in court today charged with sexually assaulting young girls in the 1980s, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. Randell stood silent during his brief appearance in the Hobart court. The 42-year-old school teacher did not enter a plea. He was granted bail and ordered to appear in court on July 16. Randell rose to prominence as cricket umpire in the mid-1980s and has officiated in 36 Tests and 88 limited overs internationals.
Never far from controversy, Randell's most recent Test was the dramatic Australia versus South Africa match in Adelaide in January.
Randell was at the non-strikers end when Australian batsman Mark Waugh knocked his stumps with his bat. Randell referred the matter to the third umpire who ruled Waugh was not out, sparking an angry response from the South Africans.
