  "The CBI has a long way to go... it has become a tool for politicians"
Wittingly or unwittingly, R.C. Sharma has always been in the eye of a storm. Unlike his predecessor Joginder Singh, Sharma steadfastly refused to "go public" on either the cases he handled or the controversies that have marked his career. In his first post-retirement interview, the former CBI Director speaks out openly.
  Laloo's lantern fights to flicker
Like the Kosi river, Bihar's river of sorrow, which changes course every year, Laloo Yadav is worried about a change in his fortunes. His men had won five of the seven seats contested last year in the region. But things have changed and Laloo is a worried man.

Where the rich and famous vote
Constituency No 24, consisting of the Malabar Hill and its surrounding area plays host to arguably the city's richest people. The residents of this locality who are neighbours of the Maharashtra Governor, has a little over 1.6 lakh registered voters in 1998. These voters will have to choose between Murli Deora and Jayavantiben Mehta.
The last Mr Clean
Yet again, India expects. But that's about all that the voter is certain of. He is not sure precisely what it expects of him. His mission objective has something to do with the public good -- his good. He remembers diffuse ideas of progress, and tries to recall exactly why a civil society needs to be established. The options at hand have little to do with these ends. Progress appears to consist in running to stand still.
