  Face-off continues; Saddam asks UN to lift sanctions
The withdrawal of the UN weapons inspection team leader, Scott Ritter, from Baghdad seems to have emboldened Iraqi president Saddam Hussein further. Saddam has now stated that the weapons inspection will not receive any further co-operation unless the existing sanctions on Iraq were withdrawn quickly, adding that Iraq may also impose a deadlne for the team to finish its inspection.
  Clinton vs Jones case gets under way
Saturday, the 17th of January, 1998 will go down in his personal books as a black-letter day for the world's most powerful man, US president Bill Clinton. Clinton yesterday had to answer questions about his sex life from attorneys representing Paula Corbin Jones, a workaday American woman who has accused him of sexual misconduct.

Turkey's Islamic Party dissolved, leader banned from politics
Turkey's constitutional court has dissolved the pro-Islamist Welfare Party for alleged anti-secular activities. The court has also imposed a five-year ban on its leader, former Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, from politics for five years.
MQM threatens to pull out of coalition govt
The recent political upheavals in India seem to be mirroring themselves in neighbouring Pakistan. The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), a partner in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's coalition government, has threatened to witnhdraw its support to the government. The MQM move comes in protest against the continued killings of its workers by Haqiqi Terrorists.

Maheshwar project talks fail
The high-level monitoring committee on the Maheshwar project failed to reach an understanding with representatives of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) on Thursday. This stalemate ensures that the future of the Maheshwar hydro-electric project at Khargone district remains in limbo.
Six more held for Rashtrapati Bhavan theft
The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Saturday arrested six more persons in connection with the Rashtrapati Bhavan museum theft. The accused -- two goldsmiths and four scrap dealers -- have been booked for receiving and disposing of stolen property. The police also recovered 10 kg of silver and a few of the stolen antiques from the accused.
