MQM threatens to pull out of coalition govt

ASIAN NEWS INTERNATIONAL
KARACHI, January 17: The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has threatened to pull out of Prime minister Nawaz Sharif's coalition government in protest against the continued killings of its workers by Haqiqi Terrorists. MQM is a coalition partner in both the federal and the Sindh provincial governments.

Though Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML) has a majority in the federal government, it needs MQM support to remain in power in Sindh. MQM leader Aftab Ahmed Sheikh said that since February 1997, when the coalition agreement between MQM and PML was signed, 82 MQM workers and supporters had been killed by terrorists. No action had been taken against the killers, he said.

The attacks have led to a strain in MQM's relations with the Sharif government in recent months.
