Pak replaces election commissioner

REUTERS
ISLAMABAD, Dec 28: The Pakistani government, tidying up the fallout from weeks of constitutional crisis, today removed the man who tried to bar its candidate from the December 31 presidential elections. State radio said Abdul Qadeer Chaudhary, a former Supreme Court judge, had been named to replace acting Election Commissioner Mukhtar Ahmed Junejo.

The announcement was made four days before members of Pakistan's national and provincial assemblies select a replacement for Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari, who was forced out of the presidency on December 2 after a bitter struggle with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
