Clearing the haze

[Details] After months of being smothered by the worst smog it has seen in this century, South-East Asia woke up to blue skies last week. Satellite pictures showed that there were hardly any hot spots in Kalimantan and Sumatra, the main sites of the Indonesian forest fires. Environmentalists in the region, however, have said that new policies should be developed to ensure that such a catastrophe never occurs again.

Parliament shall prevail: Sharif

[Details] Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, involved in a tussle with the judiciary, yesterday said his government would bring a legislation to establish the supremacy of parliament. Sharif further added that nobody can stop parliament from performing its functions.

Another Army copter crashes in Lanka

[Details] Four Air Force personnel were killed as a Sri Lankan Army helicopter crashed in the Army-held territory Mankulam town early yesterday in northern Vanni after it was suspected to have been hit by anti-aircraft missiles fired by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels. Army sources said that the helicopter crashed near the Thalaiwadi Army camp even before it landed killing the two pilots and two gunners on board.
