Quicktakes -- Govt set to "free" CBI
NEW DELHI: The United Front Government has finalised a set of administrative measures to remove "bottlenecks in corruption cases and in the disciplinary proceedings against government servants". These include an amendment to the controversial "single-point directive" under which Government sanction is necessary to prosecute officers. Award for Ambanis NEW DELHI: Business India's Businessman of the Year 1997 award has been jointly won by brothers Mukesh and Anil Ambani of Reliance Industries. The company is rated as the country's most profitable company in the private sector, and the second largest in terms of turnover. Current sales stand at Rs 8730 crore and profits have touched Rs 1,323 crore. The selection comprised HDFC chairman and last year's winner Deepak Parekh, VSNL CMD B K Syngal, CII director general Tarun Das, the Murugappa group's COO M A Alagappan, A V Birla group chairman Mangalam Birla, M&M director R K Pitamber and ICICI deputy MD Lalita Gupte. AAI agitation NEW DELHI: Technical staff who had gone on a go-slow protest at airports all over the country, demanding that their emoluments and perks be revised, have temporarily suspended their agitation after talks with Airports Authority of India chairman Ranjan Chatterjee and senior officials on Tuesday. Bus strike NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government is contemplating invoking of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in view of the proposed Blueline Buses' strike from Wednesday even as chartered and private school buses went off roads this morning. "We are proposing to invoke ESMA and buses violating the orders will be liable for action under the Act," Delhi Transport Minister Rajendra Gupta said terming the strike by Blueline Buses as "totally unjustified and illegal". He said the government would take all steps to minimise inconvenience to commuters by deploying a fleet of 4,000 DTC buses.
