[Details] The rupee slipped to a new 21-month low of Rs 36.89 against the dollar despite the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) intervention in the inter-bank foreign exchange market here on Monday. Even though the RBI pumped in an estimated $150-200 million, it could not stem the volatility in the market.

No hasty decision on CAC, says FM

[Details] Finance minister P Chidambaram has ruled out any "hasty decisions" with regard to capital account convertibility (CAC). Speaking to a UK business delegation on Monday, Chidamabram said the country would proceed with caution along the roadmap laid down by the Tarapore Committee on CAC.

Corporate profits rise in H1

[Details] If the performance of companies in the first six-month period ended September 1997 is any indication, the corporate sector is likely to perform better in the current year. According to a study conducted by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) while sales growth declined further during the first half of 1997-98, there are signs of recovery in profits. The study covered the H1 results of 53 manufacturing companies during October 1997.
