A small victory for Munde

[Details] The appointment of R H Mendonca as Mumbai's Commissioner of Police in place of S C Malhotra, might be touted as victory for Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde. Since the alliance government came into power two and half years ago, this is the first time that Chief Minister Manohar Joshi has approved a proposal by Munde.

No consensus on water sharing

[Details] The 22nd meeting of the Southern Zonal Council could not reach an agreement on the issues of sharing of river water and power and have decided to refer them to the Inter-State Council. The five participating states -- Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry -- have however accepted to evolve certain common guidelines for the sharing of river water.

Centre's ultimatum to polluting units

[Details] In a major effort to rid the nation's rivers of industrial effluent discharge, State Pollution Control Boards (PCB) have sent notices to nearly 2,000 industries which do not have adequate effluent treatment facilities, and discharge their waste directly into the rivers.
