Lata gets Rajiv Gandhi award

NEW DELHI, Aug 20: Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar today received the 1996 Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for her outstanding contribution to the country through her national and patriotic music.``I consider this as the highest among the awards from Non-Governmental Organisations that I have received in my life,'' the 68 year-old Lata said while receiving the award from the president, K R Narayanan, at a colourful function in Jawahar Bhavan here.The award comprising Rs 2.50 lakh cash, a shawl and a citation, was presented to her in the presence of the First Lady, Usha Narayanan, Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister, P V Narasimha Rao and Sitaram Kesri.Her famous song Aye mere watan ke logon, zara aankh mein bhar lo pani, made the jampacked audience spell-bound and the people gave her a standing ovation.
