Greater Bombay Police get past L&T

MUMBAI, May 30: Greater Bombay Police (GBP) beat Larsen & Toubro 2-1 in the JC Maitra Cup football tournament at the St Xavier's Complex, Parel, today.The teams were locked 1-1 at half-time after a well contested session during which the cops enjoyed a slight edge. GBP finally got in right after spurning several chances in the first half. Kamlakar Kharat opened the scoring, capping a fine individual effort from the left with a finish in the 41st minute that left L&T goalkeeper Prakash Khavaner helpless. Police's joy was however short lived. Just three minutes later, Oscar D'Souza neatly headed in the equaliser. But GBP were not to be denied the match-winner and a 59th-minute strike by Kamlaker Kharat settled the issue. Rosary prevail Our Lady of Rosary beat St Joseph's (Juhu) by 7-2 in the Vincentian Youth Movement Inter-Parish football tournament at St Elias High School Ground, Khar, today. The winners scored through Savio Braz (3), Savio Rodrigues (2) and Keven Antao (2). St Joseph netted through Carmo Rodrigues (2). St Anthony (Malad) beat St Vincent de Paul (Khar) 3-1. The Malad side notched their goals through John Heitao (2) and Phillip D'Souza while Denzil D'Souza was the hosts' lone scorer. Mirza enjoys field day Irfan Mirza enjoyed a day of victories in the CCI Open snooker tournament today. The cueist from Calcutta easily got past Gunjung Narang 3-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 win over teenager Nikil Ootani. R Thukra, a student from Delhi, found it tough going at first against Sanjay Sawant before prevailing in the final frame. Veteran Subash Sood, also from the capital, put in a fine display to down Chetan Aurora 37-71, 77-15, 63-43, 98-37. Chandresh Shah grabbed opportunities presented to him to oust Jatinder Dawer 3-0. Dawer had a 59 break in the second frame to lead by 42 points but Shah cleared with a 43 en route to winning 55-54, 60-59, 63-26. Varun Taneja overcame the challenge of Chirag Ramakrishnan 3-1 (1-74, 70-57, 55-26, 64-30) to clinch a place in the last eight. In action on the billiards table, Raju Adani beat Gautam Khanwani 644-451. Khanwani forfeited 100 points for later arrival, while Jatinder Dawer played consistently to beat Chetan Dalal 513-370. Rupesh Shah (Gujarat) the No 1 seed in the billiards competition did not turn up for his match today. CBI held Bombay Muslims and Central Bank of India (CBI) drew 1-1 in a WIFA Senior Division football league match at the Cooperage, today. Haji Pasha found the net for Bombay Muslims while Caetano Fernandes was on target for the bankmen. Carrom tourney The Maharashtra Carrom Association, is organising the Late Hindu Madhav Thackeray Memorial Maharashta State ranking prize money carrom tournament between 3rd June to 18th June 1997, at Sir Eli Kadoori High School, Mazgaon, Mumbai 400 010. The tournament is being sponsored by Shri Bala Nandgaonkar MLA and Shri Yeshwant Jadhav, Municipal Corporator. As much as Rs 75,000 is on offer as cash prizes which including awards for break to finish and black to finish besides a `Player of the Day' award. Held under the auspices of the Maharashtra Carrom Association, the event have open singles and women singles event with 600 players, coming from 12 districts around Maharashtra, participating.
