No pathway to Zehn Don, says collector

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

MUMBAI, May 30: Mumbai Suburban District Collector, Dr Sanjay Chahande has revoked his earlier order to construct a temporary pathway to the grounded ship M V Zehn Don off Carter Road, Bandra (West).

The Collector informed a delegation from the Varun Co-operative Housing Society, Starlet Co-operative Housing Society and Bandra (West) Resident Association which represents over 200 buildings in Bandra (West), at a meeting on Friday morning. The Collector said that he had issued a `stop work notice till further orders' on Wednesday, soon after the delegation raised objections about the construction of a pathway through the sea as it violated the Coastal Regulation Zone. The delegation brought to his attention the fact that inspite of his stop work notice, work had continued at the site throughout the next day.

``Our chief concern was to get the oil from the ship removed. In the last four months we could remove 80 per cent of oil from the ship but the residual oil had semi-solidified into a sludge and had to be,'' Mumbai suburban collector Dr Sanjay Chahande told Express Newsline.

He said that the developers plan to construct a permanent road instead of a temporary one which had been decided, was `not desirable', adding that the builders had been asked to demolish the road immediately.
