Getting it right about the Americans

Through the Indira Gandhi days of the late 1960s and through the 1970s, there was a strong Soviet Union lobby in the corridors of power. Its ripples were to be felt in the culture circuit, in academia, and even in the media. The Soviets could do no wrong, was the theme song then.

Universal primary education -- Bommai cracks a bad joke

Great news, at last, for the millions of out-of-school children of India. Fifty years after independence and 37 years after the unmet Constitutional deadline for universal primary education, elementary schooling is to become a Fundamental Right!

Only this time round, it's a private channel that is engaged in the publicity routine, taking justifiable pride in notching up a first for satellite television.
