Steel must blend

While not going overboard, like Rajnigandha (‘Ten little TRPs’, January 30), a dignified swelling of India’s steel chest is more than justified by Tata Steel’s successful 608 pence bid for Corus. Tata has handsomely won its game of ‘tag’ with CSN, and accompanied by Sourav Ganguly’s nicely timed innings, it was joyous news. But with this hurdle overleapt, the media must not flip over (as in KBC) the germane question of whether the deal’s gains justify the price. They should obtain facts, and address this for the benefit of shareholders.
—Prashant Pandit

Escaping BB+
The debt-rating upgrade (‘S&P raises India’s currency rating to investment grade’, January 31) should help India attract more foreign and NRI investment and promote growth, even though inflation and agriculture are concerns (‘Inclusive growth’, January 31). Tata’s Corus win is happy news—not only for Tata, but the rest of us.
—A Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapura
Heretical field
Swami Vivekananda was a man far ahead of his times. He gave us quotations which inspire us till today. Consider his immortal line, “The way to god lies through the football field”, which must have been quite heretical in his day.
—Vikas P Joshi Pune
