Cong
refuses to comment on Indo-Pak talk in Kathmandu
Our Political Bureau
New Delhi, Jan 2: The Congress on Wednesday said the
decision to hold Indo-Pak dialogue on the sidelines of the Saarc
conference in Kathmandu should be left to the government.
Responding to a query if the Congress would favour such a dialogue,
party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said, “such tactical decisions
should be best left to the government”. Asked if the party would
favour a war to eliminate cross-border terrorism, Mr Reddy said,
“Congress never talks of propositions like war. It is for taking
all possible steps to see that terrorists are brought to book.”
Asked if the party was satisfied with the steps taken by the
government so far, Mr Reddy said, “the process is still on and
we should not declare any premature judgement”.
Answering another question, the Congress spokesperson said the
party was not satisfied with Pakistani action against terrorists.
“While some of the measures are welcome, most of the measures
are cosmetic”. “They are indicative of tokenism. They do not
indicate the sincere resolve of the Pakistan government to bring
terrorists to justice,” he said.
Asked if Congress president Sonia Gandhi would lead any delegation
the government proposed to send abroad to explain New Delhi’s
stand on Pak-sponsored cross-border terrorism, he said it would
depend on her schedule in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections
in some states. However, the Congress spokesman made it clear
that the party would take full part in the process and choice
of leaders to participate in the delegations would be made when
concrete proposals in this regard come from the government.
