TVS Motor posts 10% rise in December sales

Bangalore, Jan 1: TVS Motor Company Ltd on Tuesdady reported a 10 per cent rise in its overall sales in December as compared to the same period in 2000 as its motorcycles sales fared well, but sales of its mopeds and TVS Scooty declined.

The motorcycle sales showed a strong performance with sales increasing by 40 per cent (43,220 units) over the same period in December, 2000 (30,859 units), a company statement said.

It said the overall sales was 73,259 units as compared to 66,319 units in the same period last year. The growth in revenue terms was 10 per cent due to higher ratio of motorcycles sold.

However, sales of TVS Scooty was down by 21 per cent with sales of 8,432 units as compared to 10,641 units in December, 2000, but it continued to be the leader in scooterette segment with a share of 37 per cent in the ungeared market, the company said.

Likewise, moped sales was 21,582 units in comparison with 24,813 units in the same period last year.

The moped sales overall has seen a declining trend in the domestic two-wheeler market, the release said. Expressing confidence about the long-term prospects of the moped market, it said it had plans to launch a four-stroke moped in the second-quarter of next fiscal which, the company said, would be the first of its kind in the
country.
