RSS outfit terms Dabhol deal ‘fraudulent’

Sanjay Jog

Mumbai, Nov 27: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) outfit Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Tuesday renewed its attack against the distressed 2,184 mw Dabhol project and termed it as “fraudulent”.

The SJM, which had run the anti-Enron campaign since the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Enron and Maharashtra government in 1993, ruled out the possibility of revival of Dabhol project unless the fuel was changed. Speaking to The Financial Express SJM national co-convener S Gurumurthy said that SJM does not see any hope for the revival of Dabhol project without any change in the fuel.

“With the liquified natural gas (LNG) as fuel, there is no hope for the survival of the project. The alternate fuel can be liquified coal or anything else which has to be looked into,” he opined.

Mr Gurumurthy alleged that the Enron promoted Dabhol project was beginning to be “fraudulent”. “The company promoted Dabhol project with a sole objective of selling LNG from the plant,” he noted. SJM office bearer C Abraham said that these days Enron has become a word synonymous to “fraud.”

He lashed out at the former Union finance secretary Montek Singh Ahluwalia for going ahead with the deal despite strong objection from the World Bank.
