Canon India rolls out fresh imaging products, prints new strategy

In a bid to increase its share in the Indian IT market, Canon India has announced a bunch of imaging products with a fresh series of strategic measures.

The software development division of Canon India, which would be exporting around $5 million worth of software to its parent company this year (Jan-Dec 2001), has targeted 100 per cent growth in the next three years. Canon India managing director Alan D Grant said, “We have around 50 employees working in Indian software development division which will grow to 100 people by 2004. Similarly, the company will also double its software export to $10 million in next three years from India."

The new product range includes six bubble jet printers, four flatbed scanners and two laser printers. The new launches have marked Canon’s entry into the high-value laser printer market in India. The company aims to capture around 18 per cent market share of the inkjet printer category in India by June 2002. Canon claims to enjoy around 5 per cent market share in the inkjet category.

According to Canon India managing director Alan D Grant, the company would earn one third of its projected Rs 500 crore turnover by 2004. Canon is expected to achieve Rs 160 crore turnover this fiscal. Mr Grant was speaking on the occasion of the launch of new products.

As part of its new strategy, the company has appointed three regional distributors: Tech Pacific for North, Compuage for West and WellWin for South. It will also add one more distributor for East very soon. Besides, Canon will also appoint 30 resellers, 30 corporate dealers, 50 retailers and 1,000 computer assemblers to better reach the customer. The company has also chalked out a separate plan for supply and distribution of its printer cartridges.

Canon launched six bubble jet printers : BJC55(portable), S400SP, S300, S600, S800 and S4500 priced at Rs 19,995, Rs 7,995, Rs 8,995, Rs 17,995, Rs 22,995 and Rs 23,995 respectively. The new laser printers: LBP810 and LBP2000 have been priced at Rs 16,500 and Rs 59,995 respectively. The four new scanners: N640P ex, D646U, N1240U, D2400UF would be available at a respective prices of Rs 4,995, Rs 5,495, Rs 10,995 and Rs 33,995.
