Nationalised
banks account for 53.4% of total deposits

Mumbai, Oct 8: Nationalised banks accounted for 53.4
per cent of the total aggregate deposits in the banking industry
with the State Bank of India (SBI) and its associates accounting
for 24.8 per cent.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday released the statistics,
which provides data on aggregate deposits and gross bank credit
of scheduled commercial banks as on last Friday of June 2001.
For other scheduled commercial banks (SCBs), the share in
aggregate deposits stood at 12.4 per cent. Foreign banks and
regional rural banks (RRBs) accounted for 5.4 per cent and
3.9 per cent respectively. The primary data have been collected
from all scheduled commercial banks.
As regards gross bank credit, nationalised banks accounted
for a share of 47.5 per cent of the total bank credit. SBI
and its associates had a share of 29.8 per cent.
Other SCBs, foreign banks and regional rural banks had relative
shares to the extent of 11.6 per cent, 8.1 per cent and 2.9
per cent respectively.
The credit-deposit (C-D) ratio of all scheduled
commercial banks worked out to be 56.5 per cent. The ratios
are above the average level in respect of foreign banks with
84.7 per cent and State Bank of India with its associates
with 67.9 per cent. The ratio are on the lower side for other
scheduled commercial banks with 52.9 per cent and nationalised
banks with 50.3 per cent.
