Tata Engg car sales up 9.8%; Indica up 49%

Mumbai, Sept 12: Tata Engineering has reported an increase of 9.8 per cent in sales volume at 14,399 vehicles in August 2001 as against 13,108 vehicles sold in August 2000. Sales of the Indica rose for the third consecutive month, with a growth of 49 per cent at 5,157 vehicles in August 2001. Cumulative sales for the car at 22,130 vehicles has also grown at 3.5 per cent this financial year. The car’s market share increased to 19 per cent in its segment in the end of August 2001.

In the commercial vehicles segment, the company reported sales of 4,293 medium and commercial vehicles in August 2001, which was 26.3 per cent higher than August 2000, and 3.6 per cent over July this year. Sales of light commercial vehicles (LCV) grew by 33.2 per cent at 2,310 vehicles over July 2001, but recorded a drop of 6 per cent as compared to last August.

The company’s total sales of commercial vehicles in August 2001 at 6,603 vehicles notched an increase of 12.5 per cent over 5,870 vehicles sold in the corresponding period last year and 12.3 per cent over the July 2001 figures.

The passenger car business registered total sales of 7,216 vehicles in the domestic market in August 2001, which was a 22 per cent growth over August 2000 and ended the first five months of the current financial year with cumulative sales of 31,723 vehicles. The company increased its market share to 11.2 per cent of the total passenger car and utility vehicles market which comprises 13 manufacturers.

Utility vehicle sales grew by 18 per cent at 2,052 vehicles in August 2001 over July this year, but declined by 15 per cent over August 2000. Cumulative sales for the financial year stood at 9,549 vehicles, with a market share of 23 per cent in its segment.
