Rising vegetable prices boost inflation rate

New Delhi, Aug 26: INDIA’S year-on-year inflation rate measured by the wholesale price index rose in the week to August 11 and analysts said the increase was on account of higher prices of food, mainly vegetables.

“Inflation will creep up marginally as prices of vegetables tend to rise after the rains until the winter season,” Mr DK Srivastava, economist with National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, said.

The official wholesale price index for all commodities (base 1993-94=100) for the week ended August 11 stood at 161.6, up from 161.4 in the previous week. The index for food articles rose to 176.8 from 176 in the previous week, and within it, the index for vegetables rose to 200.2 from 192.5.
