What is going to be killer application that will see mobile commerce (m-commerce) taking off? While short messaging service (SMS) is already a big hit in many markets, smart payment solutions built into the mobile phone could emerge as a major driver for m-commerce, according to Prithwis Mukerjee, head of e-business strategy at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“Payment solutions on the mobile are already a reality in some countries, where the wallet is converged with the cellphone. The charge for a purchase is placed not on the credit card account but in the cellphone bill,” he said.

Transactional services could also emerge among the more popular uses of m-commerce. “We have developed a solution to allow access to the ERP networks through GSM networks.,” he said. Location-based service offerings could also become a hit. Game sites are the most popular sites on the Internet. Gaming through mobile devices could be the killer application for a Tamagochi-obsessed country like Japan.
