Consumer
price index rises by 4.7 per cent

New Delhi, May 16: ANNUAL rate of inflation as per the all-India
consumer price index for urban non-manual employees (UNME) has registered
a rise of 4.7 per cent for the latest recorded period of April this
year.
As per the Central Stastical Organisation (CSO) data, the all-India
index stands at 379, almost two points above that of the previous
level for the month of March.
This was followed by a rise in the increase in the prices of the
major group ‘food, beverages and tobacco,’ which registered a rise
of 0.8 per cent; the sub-group ‘vegetables’ registered a rise of
7.08 per cent; and sub-group ‘pan-supari and tobacco’ registered
a rise of 4.01 per cent.
Out of the 59 selected cities, the variation of the index for Srinagar
stood highest at 10.4 and the least for Gulbarga at 0.3 per cent.
Variation between 0 to 3 per cent was registered for 10 centres,
3.1 to 6 per cent for 36 centres and 6.1 to 9 per cent for 12 centres,
and more than 9.1 per cent for one centre.
As many as 31 centres have registered a lower annual increase as
compared to the overall figure of 4.7 per cent and 31 centres registered
a higher percentage increase as compared to the overall level.
